The commemoration of Vietnam Human Rights Day this year will take place in the Dirksen Senate Office Building, Room 106, on Tuesday, May 11, 1999, from 1 to 5 p.m.

This year marks the fifth anniversary of the House-Senate Joint Resolution designating May 11, 1994 as Vietnam Human Rights Day, which was subsequently signed by President Clinton into public law (103-258). This event gives us an opportunity to thank the U.S. Congress for its strong support of human rights, to honor the human rights activists, democracy advocates and freedom fighters, and to draw public attention to the continuing violations of human rights in Vietnam.

We would be deeply honored if you could attend the Capitol Hill event as well as a dinner at the Fortune Restaurant on Leesburg Pike (Route 7) in Falls Church, Virginia at 7:30 p.m. We are inviting many Members of Congress and representatives of the AFL-CIO, AMA, and several international human rights organizations to participate.

There will be delegations from Vietnamese American communities in California, Florida, Louisiana, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, Texas, and from the Washington metropolitan area. Vietnamese delegations from Australia, Canada and France will also attend. We expect to have about 400 to 500 attendees.

The event will be fully covered by Vietnamese and American media.
