The Vietnam Human Rights Network will be accepting nominations for the 2008 Vietnam Human Rights Award (VNHRA) from now until September 30, 2008.

VNHRA was founded in 2002 with the purpose of providing recognition and support to the works of outstanding human rights activists who have made significant contributions to the cause of human rights and civil rights of the Vietnamese people as stipulated in the Universal Declaration on Human Rights and other related international covenants. It is also an opportunity for the Vietnamese people around the world to demonstrate their solidarity with and support for those involved in this relentless fighting for basic rights and justice.

Since its establishment the VNHRA has been presented to a number of human rights activists in Vietnam, including Most Venerable Thich Quang Do, Father Nguyen Van Ly, Mr. Nguyen Vu Binh, Mr. Le Chi Quang, Doctor Pham Hong Son, Mr. Nguyen Khac Toan, Mr. Pham Que Duong, Doctor Nguyen Dan Que, Rev. Le Quang Liem, Father Phan Van Loi, Venerable Thich Tue Sy, Mr. Do Nam Hai, Mr. Nguyen Chinh Ket, Mr. Hoang Minh Chinh, Lawyer Nguyen Van Dai, and Lawyer Le Thi Cong Nhan. Most of the VNHRA winners are currently in jail, house arrested, or permanently harassed. VHRN continues to call on the world to show its concern for the Vietnamese people’s lack of freedom and human rights, especially those who have received the VNHRA.

The 2008 VNHRA will be conferred at the Commemoration of the 60th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights organized by VNHRN in December 2008. The  Award winner(s) will be officially announced on November 11, 2008 after they will have been notified. The VNHRN needs generous financial donation and political support to make this event a success.
