Dr. Nguyen Thanh Giang’s Wife Calls for a Full Investigation into Threats and Intimidation against her Husband

While you are preoccupied with hundreds of tasks such as leading the economic development to 8% growth target for 2005, or preparing for the 10th Party Congress, I really do not want to bother you, Comrades. However, there have been a series of unusual incidents, which terrorize our quiet family life and seriously endanger my husband's life, Mr. Nguyen Thanh Giang. I respectfully report as following:
At 10 AM April 5, 2005, three "disabled" veterans, Tran Minh Tuan residing at 159 Phung Hung, Do Tien Duc at 50 Hang Cot. Tran Anh Dung at 92 Ly Thuong Kiet, came to our house and caused a disturbance, pretending to argue over a statement that Mr. Giang wrote in the article "About the Super Imperative Political Mystery at the Department 2."
On April 12, 2005, these three individuals filed a complaint with the Party and the Government leadership, falsely accusing of Mr. Giang as stating that "the resistance against American was a war with no meaning" to incite public opinion. They brazenly called Mr. Giang a "reactionary, anti-party and anti-government element" and advocated "eliminating him (Mr. Giang) from the life of society."
On the morning of April 16, 2005, two of the three disabled veterans and four other persons broke into our house and caused loud commotions for almost an hour, creating an impression with our neighbors that we were engaging in illegal activities and the police had to intervene.
Mr. Giang is an honest, sincere, friendly and outgoing person. If those individuals had really wanted a discussion to exchange ideas, then they would have been warmly welcome and Mr. Giang would have eagerly listened and debated with them. However, in this real incident, we saw there were hidden unhealthy motives. For example:
1) They said they came to debate but they have neither read nor have any knowledge of what Mr. Giang has written. They also did not know where the quotes from the People Police magazine and the Vietnam Legal magazine appeared or in what context or for what purpose.
2) When I informed Mr. Tran Anh Dung that he had filled a complaint against my husband to the leadership, so he should wait until they responded, he was dumbfounded, and replied that he did not write nor send the complaint. So who did it?
3) Why did they claim that they were disabled veterans living in various places, yet they were all transported together to my house in a car?
4) Why was there a young man who was born after 1975 in the group? He cannot be a veteran. Who gave him the task to carry a video recorder and for what purpose did he videotape inside my house?
5) Since having written two articles "About the Super Imperative Mystery at Department 2" and "The Defense Department Has Neglected Its Duty-A Warning for the Danger of Losing the Country," Mr. Giang and our family have received a series of threatening letters, terrorizing us. Those letters, which purportedly were signed and mailed by two separate groups, were written with the same handwriting on the envelopes.
6) An acquaintance has informed us that a cadre of the Police Department would come to my house on April 30, 2005 to cause harm to our property.
Facing this situation, I cannot help but worry for our safety. I respectfully report this to you, Comrades, and wish that you would order an investigation. If this violence was an unpremeditated act of some individuals, then please remind them to respect the law, to respect social mores and social conventions in order to prevent regretful violence. If it was incited by an individual or an agency due to mistaken thinking or unhealthy motives, then there is a need to seriously solve the case to stop them from continue doing bad things, hurting the credibility of the Party and the Government.
