Joint Statement by Overseas Vietnamese Regarding Father Nguyen Van Ly’s Re-arrest

The prisoner of conscience Father Nguyen Van Ly was rearrested and sent back to prison by the Vietnamese communist authorities on July 25, 2011 in spite of his serious health condition that needs special medical care.

Under the present circumstances, we the representatives of various mass organizations and associations in the overseas Vietnamese community, solemnly declare:

1.       That we denounce the Vietnamese communist authorities’ revenge against Father Nguyen Van Ly for his relentless fighting for Freedom, Democracy, and Human Rights, as well as for his public warning against Red China’s invasion of Vietnam with the quiet support of Vietnamese communist party leaders to maintain their power at the expense of the loss of national integrity.

2.       That we demand the Vietnamese communist authorities to immediately and unconditionally release Father Nguyen Van Ly, our outstanding patriotic prisoner of conscience.

3.       That we seek the help of governments and parliaments of free nations, as well as that of international human rights NGOs, so as to put pressure on Hanoi to release at once Father Nguyen Van Ly and to treat him fairly and in a humanitarian way in accordance with international human rights norms.
