The Conservative Party Human Rights Commission Deplores the Incarceration of Mr. Nguyen Vu Binh

For the attention of
His Excellency Mr Pham Gia Khiem
Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam
His Excellency Mr Trinh Duc Du
Ambassador of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam to the United Kingdom

20th January, 2007

Your Excellency,

As Vietnam monitor for the Conservative Party Human Rights Commission, an urgent matter has recently been brought to my attention by a large number of individuals in and outside Vietnam.

Mr Nguyen Vu Binh is a political prisoner, incarcerated since September 2002 for expressing support for a multiparty democratic system in Vietnam. He is currently resident in Nam Ha jail. A large number of people are very worried for his life. Kept in a cramped cell, he has been suffering from chronic digestive disturbances and his blood pressure has recently become dangerously high. His family are concerned not only that this will put strain on his vital organs, including his brain, but that his life now appears to be in danger. Despite his family’s repeated requests for medical attention, the authorities at Nam Ha jail appear to have made no efforts to protect his health and preserve his life.

The Conservative Party Human Rights Commission deplores the incarceration of Mr Nguyen Vu Binh, or any other individual, for expressing their desire for democracy. At this time we are also extremely concerned for his welfare and that he has not received proper medical attention. We are sure that, like us, you cherish and value human life, and we therefore look forward to your attention to this urgent and extremely important matter. I have attached information about this prisoner for your reference.

I very much look forward to your reply.

With best wishes,
Yours sincerely,
Radomir Tylecote
